The search for a new Black Stars coach has begun following the sacking of Otto Addo after the team’s defeat to Germany on Monday, March 30, 2026.
His dismissal takes immediate effect, according to his employers, the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
With less than three months to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Mexico and Canada, the hunt for a new coach taken significant shape.
Two-time Afcon winner and coach of Saudi Arabia Herve Renard, together with ex-Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah, emerged as favourites for the vacant role.
However, both are under contracts with the Saudi and Sudan national teams respectively.
In the midst of the discussion, Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, indicated that the GFA and the Sports Ministry closely monitoring developments surrounding Renard.
He noted as although the GFA and the Sports Minister Kofi Adams are reliably informed of the situation, they continue to stay on guard.
“I have already received several messages about this coach as a potential long term replacement option for Ghana. GFA President Kurt E. S. Okraku is fully aware that Herve Renard at present is with Saudi Arabia where the Arabians re-signed him for the World Cup.
“I am also reliably informed that Coach Renard is having a dicey relationship with the Saudis and his future might be reviewed after the game with Serbia on Tuesday evening. Sports Minister Hon Kofi Iddi Adams is 100% alert to the developments,” Mr. Ankrah said in a Facebook post.
Otto Addo becomes the sixth coach to handle the Black Stars in recent times after Chris Hughton, Otto Addo, Milovan Rajevac, Charles Akonnor and Akwasi Appiah.
