Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Odododiodio Constituency, Paul Oblie Laryea, has blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Sunday’s violent clash between supporters of the two parties.

Speaking on Angel FM’s ‘Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ’ morning show on Monday, October 25, 2020, Oblie Laryea said several rounds of ammunition were fired allegedly from NPP side while he was delivering an address at Opera Square after a health walk with his party’s supporters.

Supporters of the two leading political parties were seen in a video throwing bottles as well as hurling stones and insults at each other.

It is not clear what sparked the supporters of incumbent NDC MP, Nii Lante Vanderpuye and NPP’s Nii Lante Bannerman, to start violent exchanges.

But the NDC chairman for the area, Oblie Laryea claimed one particular person [name withheld] who is known by the police and the government for causing several atrocities in the constituency, was seen firing about 10 bullets from a firearm.

Three of the victims, he said, were receiving treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

Meanwhile, the NPP chairman for the constituency, Raymond Tettey, has said that the constituency will never have peace if the current Nii Lantey Vanderpuye continues as their Member of Parliament (MP).

He told Peace FM that ever since Nii Lantey Vanderpuije was elected as the parliamentary candidate for the NDC in 2012, the constituency has never known peace and that was what triggered events over the weekend.

He added: “We want peace in Odododidodoo. These things started in 2012 when Nii Lante [Vanderpuye] became the candidate and if there would be peace in Odododiodio, we have to take out Nii Lante as an MP because the NPP had no hand in what happened yesterday.”
