The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has called for public support in policing its installations in the area.

The plea follows nascent theft cases and vandalising of ECG equipment, of which a recent is that which occurred in the Afienya-Prampram District where it is reported that thieves have stolen a transformer – the only source of power for residents of Adjumador.

The Public Relations Officer for the Tema Region of the power supplier, Sakyiwaa Mensah, in an interview with Angelonline.com.gh, bemoaned the illegality saying it does not only create inconveniences for their customers, but also causes financial loss to the company.

“We have to spend resources to replace these transformers,” said the PRO.

According to her, there are 4000 installed transformers within the Tema Region and these are pole-mounted i.e. fixed between poles.

As a result, it is impossible to provide a 24-hour security for all the 4000 pole-mounted transformers.

She thus called for support in ensuring that the ECG equipment are protected from “miscreants” who would want to damage or steal the state properties.

“If you see anybody around ECG installation and per their demeanour they are suspicious, please alert the police, ECG” she encouraged.

Madam Sakyiwaa stressed that the individuals policing the installations have “every right to demand to know” what whoever is around the equipment is doing, and to “demand to see their Identity cards”.

According to her, if they are unable to show their ECG Identity cards, “its most likely they are not officials of ECG and they are just there to do something bad.”
