The Chief Executive Officer of the Telecommunications Chamber, Ken Ashigbey, has said that the implementation of the 1.5% levy on all electronic transactions (e-levy) has not begun.
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, earlier hinted that the implementation of the levy may begin in May 2022.
He indicated that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) will have the systems in place for the operationalization of the levy by then.
However, the Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, is reported to have claimed that some institutions are putting measures in place to start charging the tax.
But responding to the claim, Mr. Ashigbey stated that it is only preparatory engagements that have been done.
“It is not as if anybody is implementing anything”, he stressed.
He indicated that what parliament passes is only a bill but it becomes a law after a presidential assent.
He added that “in terms of the engagements we had with GRA, that was the spirit of the fact that the Bill was before Parliament. Since we had those initial conversations, there hasn’t been any implementation.”
“I have not seen the bill that has been passed, so we have not seen the date in there, so it will depend on what the GRA directs for our members to follow and configure their systems. So, there is still a lot to be done, and we are still waiting,” he said.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assented to the Electronic Transaction Bill (E-levy) which was approved by parliament on Tuesday, March 29, 2002.
He signed the Bill at the Jubilee House today, on Thursday, March 31, 2022.
