The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Titus Beyuo, has expressed concerns that doctors and nurses trained in the country are leaving to practice their profession abroad.
According to him, if strategic measures are not put in place to halt the situation, the country would suffer from brain drain in the medical profession.
Speaking in a TV3 interview, he said that “…as we speak, doctors, nurses are leaving this country in droves, brain drain has returned in full swing.”
Dr. Beyou despite refusing to disclose figures to back his claim explained that he knows that brain drain has returned because “I am the General Secretary of the GMA.”
He however opted to give some examples to buttress his stance.
“But I can give you some examples, I will give you a unit in one hospital I won’t name, a big hospital in Accra, from January till now, five doctors have left that unit.”
Touching on the solutions to the emerging problem at hand, he proposed that “apart from training the workers, we must find a way of earmarking them, attracting them and retaining them there.”
In his view, a major challenge is that government’s Agenda 111 policy seems not to be in sync with the human resource policies of the Ministry of Health, a situation that he feels must be addressed.
