Ex-President John Dramani Mahama has proposed to President Nana Akufo-Addo that his Vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, be relieved of his position as Chairman of the Economic Management Team.
The former President believes the dire economic crisis of the country is attributed to Dr Bawumia’s abysmal performance as head of the Economic Management Team.
That notwithstanding, he is convinced that the latter deserves a sack from his post to allow the President to restructure the team to lead the country’s economic management.
Mr Mahama made the statement in a Facebook post while welcoming the government’s decision to go in for a bailout at the International Monetary Fund.
“In addition, given his obvious failures, the Vice President must be relieved of his responsibility as Chair of the Economic Management Team to enable the President to reconstitute the team.”
Also, Mr Mahama urged President Akufo-Addo to exclude the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from the team that would negotiate the bailout programme with the IMF.
“The Finance Minister, who has supervised the disastrous collapse of the economy, cannot and should not be part of the team of negotiators,” he wrote.
Considering the failure of the finance ministry to steer the economy to success, Mr. Mahama said Mr. Ofori Atta must be fired because of the trust and credibility lost in him.
“President Akufo-Addo must take a bold decision to replace his finance minister immediately with a more assured and competent person, who is willing and able to work tirelessly to turn our almost hopeless situation around,” he reiterated.
The ex-president further counsels Ghanaians to draw useful lessons from the happenings and desist from politicising the economy.
