An Accra High Court has sentenced a Liberian national to ten years imprisonment for attempting to smuggle cocaine, a narcotic drug through the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Bangkok, Thailand.
The convict, Wolo Maikplay Margaret, was apprehended by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) on Saturday, May 14, 2022, while transiting the narcotics through KIA from Monrovia, Liberia to Bangkok-Thailand onboard Qatar Airways.
She was subsequently arraigned before the Accra High Court on August 31, 2022.
She was charged with two counts of attempted exportation and possession of a narcotic drug in violation of sections 36 and 37 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019), respectively.
She pleaded guilty to the two counts and the court presided over by her Ladyship Justice Mary Ekua Yanzuh convicted her on her plea on each count to run concurrently.
The court also fined her an amount of GHC10,000 penalty units in default to serve three years additional term.
A search conducted on her following the arrest led to the retrieval of 30 pellets containing cocaine weighing 277.2101grams from beneath her breast and private part.
