Ghanaian students studying Medicine and Dentistry in Ukraine have expressed their displeasure in the decision not to recognize their certificates upon completion of their medical studies.
Their concerns come after the Medical and Dental Council announced their resolve that degree certificates issued by Medical and Dental Schools from Ukraine won’t be accepted.
The Council explained that their decision is aimed at ensuring that the standard of training of doctors is not compromised upon learning that medical and dental students are continuing their training via online platforms as most Universities in Ukraine have shut down due to the Russia-Ukraine War.
The Registrar for the Medical Council, Dr. Divine Ndonbi Banyubala stressed that “training to be a doctor must be in accordance with established strategies.
“Will potential patients be happy to be treated by a doctor who was trained online? We have to take our public interest responsibility seriously. The point is what is the kind of training that is acceptable in the world? If it is not standard, then, I am afraid, this regulator will not give any stamp of approval”, he questioned further.
However, an Executive Member of the National Union of Ghana Students in Ukraine, Henry Brook Smith lamented that “this decision has been taken without recourse to the effects on parents and students.”
Mr. Brook Smith added in a Citi News interview that “Ukraine is currently running an offline mode. The online is being organised for those who can’t make it to Ukraine due to the invasion.”
According to the Dental Council, their decision should be hailed instead of the criticisms they are receiving in their bid to fulfill their mandate and promote standards.
