The government has condemned the developments in Nalerigu, a community in the Upper West Region, concerning the purported enskinment of a new Bawku Naba.
In a statement signed by the information minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah described as illegal the alleged enskinment and a threat to national security in the midst of the unrest in the area.
“The Government condemns developments in Nalerigu today February 15, 2023, concerning the purported enskinment of a new Bawku Naba as illegal and a threat to National Security,” the government said in its statement issued by the Ministry of Information.
The government also reiterated that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the Bawku Naba, duly gazetted and a member of the National and Upper East Regional Houses of Chiefs.
However, it is illegal for anyone to enskin himself Bawku Naba, therefore has ordered the arrest and prosecution of any other person who holds himself out as a Bawku Naba.
According to the statement, any developments that have the potential to undermine the peace of Bawku will also be dealt with swiftly and in accordance with law.
This came to light on Wednesday after the Mamprusi faction in the protracted Bawku conflict was alleged to have gone to the palace of the overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohugu Mahama Abdulai Sherigah II for the enskinment of a new Bawku Naba.
Meanwhile, the government has noted that it only recognises Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs Member as the legitimate ruler of the area.
