The Mayor of the City of Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, Melvin Carter, has formally announced that the city will henceforth observe October 12 as the ‘Akwamu Kingdom Day’, which will be marked across the city.
This proclamation, according to Mayor Carter, will among others, “encourage all citizens to participate in the celebration of reckoning with the truth of slavery and its brutal outcomes”.
Observing such a day will also help greatly “in passing the truth to future generations to continue to fight for freedom, peace, and love for all humanity,” he added.
Mayor Carter made the announcement at Akwamufie via a video link, on Thursday, October 12, 2023, when a delegation from the City of St. Paul, MN, led by Monique Linda paid a courtesy call on the Akwamumanhene, Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III and his elders.
Addressing the Paramount Chief, Queenmother as well as elders of the Akwamu Kingdom, Madam Linda noted that trip to Akwamufie “is to reckon with the truth and unite in our mission to confront slavery and its long term impact in America, with a common goal of making sure history never repeats itself.”
In his remark, the Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, stated that the Akwamu Kingdom “tells a story of great warriors and intellect that passed on to the African Diaspora through the the transatlantic slave trade.
That inhumane trade he stated, divided mothers from children and fathers from families, with great tolls of death and destruction which continue to impact families and communities in the African Diaspora today.”
Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, therefore stated that the ‘Akwamu Kingdom Day’ will offer opportunity to share information with the public” and the media as a way of furthering the reckoning with the truth mission of confronting slavery and the terrible suffering it unleashed on generations, so that we can move forward in peace, love, and respect for one another and all humanity.”
The delegation presented a plaque to the Akwamumanhene as a symbol of the City’s partnership with Akwamuman for the good of humanity.
