A Communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwaku Owusu Banahene has alleged that the presidential bid of the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor is sponsored by the ruling government.
According to Banahene, he cannot fathom why Madam Donkor would be cleared to contest the upcoming presidential elections on December 7, 2024, at the expense of other parties that were disqualified.
The 72-year-old female politician picked the 3rd position on the ballot paper for the coming 2024 presidential elections.
However, 11 other candidates including Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), were disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC).
In light of this, Mr. Owusu Banahene has questioned the credibility and integrity of the EC as a serious institution to allow the Ghana Freedom Party to contest the elections at the expense of the PNC among others.
“Today, the Electoral Commission can clear Akua Donkor, but the same institution could disqualify Bernard Mornah. Someone who could not identify her position number on the ballot paper, how can she file nominations to be seeking to become a president?
“Where was she going to get the money for the nomination fee? But in all this, it is the NPP which funded her. Someone who goes to an IPAC meeting and resorts to insult? All she did was support anything the NPP’s flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said at the meeting,” he told Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah on the Angel Morning Show.
