Attorney General (AG) and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has engaged highly experienced American lawyers to contest his extradition to Ghana.
Dr. Ayine made this disclosure on Thursday, December 18, 2025, during the government’s Accountability Series, following the formal submission of an extradition request to US authorities.
“The person who is the subject of an extradition will fight it in court. I have been informed that Mr Ofori-Atta has hired some of the top lawyers in the US with extensive experience to defend him,” Dr Ayine said, stressing that the move does not deter Ghanaian officials.
He explained that extradition cases in the United States proceed through the federal court system, which allows for several stages of judicial review.
“He has the right to challenge any decision through the federal district court, the circuit court and, ultimately, the US Supreme Court if he is dissatisfied,” Dr Ayine added.
While acknowledging that the legal process could be protracted, the Attorney-General expressed confidence in Ghana’s request for Ofori-Atta’s extradition.
“I have formally transmitted a request for the extradition of former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and his Chef de Cabinet, Ernest Darko Akore,” he stated.
The US Department of Justice is now expected to assess the request and decide whether Ofori-Atta and Akore should be extradited to Ghana.
“At this point, it is left with the American authorities, especially the Judicial authorities, to make a determination on whether a sufficient basis exists for the two accused persons to be extradited to Ghana to stand trial,” Dr Ayine added.
