Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana and Burkina Faso are in negotiations to establish a security framework aimed at collectively neutralizing violent extremists.
During a speech on his two-day visit to Burkina Faso on Saturday, February 21, 2026, he emphasized the need for cooperation in light of recent violence.
“We condemned the latest extremist violence in Titao, where a number of Ghanaians lost their lives.
“We have decided to deepen our security cooperation and are currently negotiating a security framework that will enable us to work together to counter these violent extremists,” he pointed out.
He expressed concern about the potential for the region to become a safe haven for terrorists, saying, “We do not want this region to become the haven for these terrorists, We reject the labels suggesting it has become the epicenter of global terror.”
Mr.Ablakwa highlighted the initiative as a demonstration of the leaders’ determination to eradicate violent extremism.
“We are determine as leaders to remove this kanka and to make sure that these violent extremists are neutralize,” he highlighted.
He also extended condolences to the families of the recent attack victims, expressing gratitude to the government of Burkina Faso for its rapid response.
“We appreciate their help in evacuating and airlifting our injured back to Ghana, as well as their effective management of the situation, we were impressed by their responsive capacity,” he said.
