Popular Ghanaian-Romanian musician, Emmanuel Owusu Bonsu, widely known as ‘Wanlov the Kubolor’, has opened up about how his distinctive wrapper-tying fashion began.
During an interview with media personality Kafui Dey, the musician revealed that the style was born out of necessity during his time living in Los Angeles.
According to him, he owned only a few wrappers but had many pairs of shorts, which were often all dirty at the same time because he did his laundry in bulk at a laundromat. With no clean shorts to wear on laundry days, he resorted to wrapping a piece of cloth around his waist before heading out.
“I think the wrapper idea came first when I was living in L.A. I used to do my laundry at the laundromat, and I usually washed everything only when all my shorts were dirty,” he explained.
Wanlov said he would step out in the wrapper, wait for his clothes to wash and dry, and sometimes walk to McDonald’s to get food while still dressed that way. He noted that people often complimented the look, which encouraged him to embrace it.
“So I would take some clothes from the house, wrap them around myself, and go to the laundromat. While the clothes were washing, I’d go to McDonald’s, still in the wrapper, and people would say it looked good,” he recounted.
The musician added that the positive reactions made him feel comfortable and free, eventually turning what started as a practical solution into his signature fashion statement.
“I was feeling free, and it became a new style for me. It’s refreshing,” he said.
