A tragic fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday, March 31, 2026, claimed the lives of a couple at Kodjonya, a suburb of the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.
One of their children, however, survived the incident but sustained multiple injuries.
The victims, identified as Martey Tetteh, believed to be in his 50s, and his wife Rebecca Lawerh, in her 30s, were trapped in the early morning inferno, leading to their untimely deaths.
According to Angel News’ Jaman Dehyee Opambour, the couple was burned beyond recognition in the devastating incident.
The survivor, who was rescued alive but suffered multiple injuries, is currently receiving medical attention at the Atua Government Hospital.
Reports indicate that there were four people in the house at the time, the late couple and their two children. One child was outside the room preparing for school when the fire broke out, leaving the injured sibling with the parents in the affected room.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but reports claim that Mr. Martey had sprinkled petrol in the hall to fight bedbugs, and it is believed that his wife may have used a gas cylinder, sparking the inferno.
Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service at the Somanya Fire Station responded swiftly to the emergency call, moved to the scene, extinguished the fire, and salvaged the situation from causing further havoc.
The bodies have been deposited at the Atua Government Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, while the Odumase Police Command has commenced investigations into the cause of the fire.
