The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Adansi North, Charles Kofi Ogbeh, has announced that the Adansi Traditional Council and AngloGold Ashanti are constructing the Fomena Treaty Centre.
Speaking to the media, Mr Ogbeh said the centre will preserve the history of the 1874 Sagranti War to boost tourism in the district.
He explained that the project will recount events from the war fought between the Ashanti and the British and will showcase Fomena, the district capital and the site where the Treaty of Fomena was signed in 1874.
“The enactment is to recount the happenings during the 1874 war that was fought between the Ashanti and the British, the significance is to expose Adansi North where we have Fomena as our capital and where the treaty of Fomena also happened during the 1874 so is to open the cultural and the tourism potential for the district,” he stated.
Mr Ogbeh added that, following the completion of the project, visitors from abroad and anyone interested in learning the history of the Ashanti and British empires in relation to the war should come to Fomena.
He said efforts are being made to retrieve artefacts from the 1874 conflict and that the centre will position Fomena as a key destination for cultural and historical learning.
“We demonstrated vividly, we recounted what happened during the war so we know that our students and the general public and today’s generation will also learn from what our forebearers did in terms of the fight for independence in terms of the defence of our sovereignty so now we as the generation now also have to learn from them,” he said.
Mr Ogbeh emphasised that the enactment and the Treaty Centre will help Ghanaian students, the general public and future generations to understand and learn from the actions of their forebears in defending their sovereignty.
