The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has held a roundtable discussion with the Media Coalition for Good Governance (MCGG) to review progress and reinforce collaboration in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Addressing the meeting, the Head of NAIMOS, Colonel Dominic Buah, acknowledged that the Secretariat’s operations have been fraught with challenges.
He noted that despite these difficulties, the Secretariat remains resolute in pursuing its mandate in line with directives from the President.

Operating under presidential authority, NAIMOS is committed to curbing illegal mining activities, particularly in galamsey-prone areas, with the aim of protecting water bodies, preserving natural resources, and safeguarding the environment.
Colonel Buah emphasized that although the task has been demanding, the Secretariat remains determined to ensure a significant reduction in illegal mining activities across the country.
He further addressed concerns about misinformation in the public domain, including claims by some media practitioners suggesting that mining activities in Ghana should be halted entirely.
He clarified that while illegal mining must be eliminated, a complete cessation of mining is neither practical nor in the national interest. Instead, he advocated for responsible and well-regulated mining practices as a sustainable path forward.
Colonel Buah called on citizens to support NAIMOS by providing credible and actionable information to aid their operations.

He also urged the Media Coalition for Good Governance to intensify public education on the Secretariat’s mandate and operational procedures, noting that accurate reporting would help curb misinformation and strengthen public confidence.
He commended the Media Coalition for its prompt support and encouraged it to sustain its efforts, including continued recognition and advocacy, to motivate personnel and enhance operational effectiveness.
On behalf of the Media Coalition for Good Governance, its Programs and Projects lead, Mr. Sampson Kumah Ifeetwube Elvis, stated that the engagement with NAIMOS was necessary to assess data and gain deeper insight into the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining.
He underscored the importance of safeguarding water bodies and maintaining a healthy environment, describing both as essential to public well-being and national economic growth.
He noted that while mining remains a significant contributor to Ghana’s economy, its long-term benefits can only be realized through responsible and regulated practices.
Mr. Sampson Kumah further affirmed the Coalition’s commitment to working closely with NAIMOS to combat misinformation and promote accurate, fact-based reporting on issues related to illegal mining.
Lead Convener of the Coalition, Kwadwo Baffour, also commended NAIMOS for its efforts since its commissioning by President John Dramani Mahama.
He observed that the Secretariat has recorded notable successes in areas where it has undertaken operations against illegal mining.
He explained that in recognition of these efforts, the Coalition presented a citation to NAIMOS to acknowledge its achievements and boost the morale of its personnel.
According to him, such recognition serves as encouragement and reinforces the importance of their work.
Mr. Baffour concluded by emphasizing that sustained collaboration between NAIMOS and the Media Coalition for Good Governance will be instrumental in effectively addressing illegal mining and advancing national development.
