The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) is organising a series of two-day orientation and training programme for members of the newly constituted Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.
This national exercise, which begun Wednesday, August 5, 2020, shall take place in 119 training centres across the 16 Regions and shall end on August 28, 2020.
A statement from the Minister for Local Government, Hajia Alima Mahama, indicated that the said orientation programme is being organised in collaboration with the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS).
“About 9,000 Assembly Members are expected to participate in this training programme, ” the statement read.
The minister in her statement said that, the training shall focus on improving the knowledge and understanding of the members of the MMDAs on topics such as “District Assemblies and Public Health Emergency (COVID-19)” and “Localizing Ghana Beyond Aid”.
Among other things, appointed members of the MMDAs shall be trained on “Ghana’s Decentralisation Policy and Local Governance System” as well as the “Roles and responsibilities of Assembly members”, the statement further stated.
The minister also directed the organisers to ensure that all the COVID-19 health and safety protocols are adhered to during the training sessions at all centres.
