The Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, says Ghana has been ranked second out of 35 countries on the status of teachers.
According to him, Ghana placed second after China based on data gathered by the Global Status Index Group which focused on countries that have improved the standards of teachers.
Speaking at the nation-building update program themed: “The Teacher at the center of Quality Education”, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, said that government’s ‘teacher first’ policy on the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) benchmark as part of the Education Strategy Plan made this achievement possible.
He said that, “on 22ND October, 2020, there was a world ranking study that came out and Ghana was ranked second in the Teacher Survey; a survey of 35 countries, thirty –five thousand (35,000) participants and the data was gathered by the Global Status Index Group”.
He added that, “they found out that for countries that respected teachers and did more for teachers, they improved their economies…and Ghana was rated second after China.”
Dr. Opoku Prempeh also stated that in the last four years, the Ministry of Education hasn’t seen teachers striking because the union among themselves know that what this government is doing for teachers has never existed before in the country.
The minister further highlighted the nine principles set out by UNESCO to holistically cater for the welfare of teachers including; Teacher Recruitment and Retention, Teacher education, Teacher deployment, Career pathways, Teacher employment and conditions of service, Teacher reward and remuneration, Teacher standards, Teacher accountability and School governance.
