The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has assured the public that an autonomous body will be established to see to the controlling of food prices in the country, especially when the food seasons go out.
His statement comes of the back of the rising cost of food produce in the country which he attributes to the climatic condition of the region.
According to him, the pattern has been the same for ages, affecting food production and consequently the prices.
That said, in a report filed by Joy News in September at the Techiman Central Market in the Bono East Region, yellow corn for instance was selling at GH₵415.00 per bag whilst the white corn was selling at GH₵370.00 per bag. This the traders have lamented because consumers are unable purchase them, hence the call on government to intervene.
However, the President noted that measures are in place to reduce the challenges experienced by persons within the food production chain, though the country “would be climate dependent, not always, but sometime to come”.
He added: “We are going to have an authority that during the harvest time, can buy the food directly from the farmers and then stock it and hopefully during time of scarcity and when food prices are shooting up, will be in the position to influence the market to bring a certain stability to food prices in the country”
Nana Akufo-Addo made the remark on Kumasi-based radio Pure FM on October 4 2021, when he went on a tour of the Ashanti Region.
He was nonetheless quick to add that though the process may not be immediately implemented because of the complexities associated with programmes of such nature, his government is “working to make sure that we improve things.”
