The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has declared that he will be impartial in performing his duties, however he cannot take a neutral stand.

He noted that he has an interest in matters that are put before the house and his interest cannot be neutral.

He however, admitted that he is mandated to be impartial and fair in the discharge of his responsibilities.

“Any matter that comes before the house, I cannot be neutral because I have an interest in it, but in performing my duty as a Speaker, I have to be impartial,”

He made the comments while addressing a delegation of the Council of State who paid him a visit.

According to Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, he doesnot expect praises to be heaped on him though he has good friends on either side of the political divide.

Members of the Council of State, who were worried about the heated tensions that have led to fisticuffs in recent parliamentary deliberations, expressed readiness to play mediation role when need be.

Chairman of the Council, Nana Otuo Siriboe, stated that the Council feels that it is bent and not broken and that it can be mended,” he said.

“However, developments in Parliament have given us a feeling that our hope may not be realised and that if we as the Council of State do not give you the support we pledged you and sat down for things to go haywire, we will equally be accused of not doing our work as expected of us by the people of Ghana.”
