President Akufo-Addo says there is no reason for him to remove Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister.
Describing the Finance Minister’s discharge of duties as excellent, the president asked what would be the rationale for sacking his Minister.
Making reference to Ghana’s exit from the IMF programme, President Akufo-Addo stressed his confidence in Ken Ofori-Atta, noting that he [Ofori-Atta] is not to blame for the economic downturn.
“I came to office in 2017 when we were under an IMF programme. This same Ken Ofori-Atta was able to manage the economy for the first 3 to 4 years. We were then one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. We had an average growth rate of 7% a year”, Akufo-Addo said on Otec FM during his tour of the Ashanti Region.
He added that he cannot betray someone who has been diligent in his performance of his duty.
He furthered that “for someone who has been able to do all these, how do I turn my back on him? For me, his performance has been excellent. That is why I have great difficulty in understanding what is going on.”
Dismissing calls for the sack of Ken Ofori-Atta, he declared that “if we were to say he didn’t do well in the first term, then why did I renominate him for my second term? So for me, their performance in my first time was excellent. Let me use that word. Excellent.”
