The Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA) has expressed serious concern over the increasing environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” in Ghana.

In a recent press release, GUNA underscored the urgent need for coordinated action to protect the environment, public health, and the future of local communities. The association stressed that galamsey activities pose a significant threat to the country’s environment, economy, and public health. Despite numerous efforts by the government, civil society, and environmental advocates, illegal mining continues to devastate Ghana’s natural resources.

The destructive impact of galamsey includes the loss of large tracts of fertile land, which are being stripped of their nutrients, leaving behind barren and hazardous landscapes. This degradation makes agricultural activities impossible, undermining food security. The illegal mining operations also contaminate major rivers and water bodies with harmful chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, posing serious health risks to communities that depend on these water sources for drinking, fishing, and irrigation. The pollution also disrupts aquatic ecosystems, causing long-term damage to biodiversity.

Furthermore, deforestation and widespread environmental destruction caused by galamsey contribute to public health hazards and severe economic consequences for affected communities.

In response to this crisis, GUNA calls on all stakeholders—including the government, traditional leaders, local communities, civil society organizations, and the private sector—to take immediate, unified action. GUNA urges the following measures: stronger law enforcement, increased community engagement and education, restoration of degraded lands, and greater international support and partnerships.

In conclusion, GUNA emphasized that the environmental damage caused by galamsey is not just a national issue but a crisis that threatens the collective future of all Ghanaians. The association remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at eradicating illegal mining and promoting sustainable development in Ghana. Through collaborative and decisive action, GUNA believes it is possible to protect the environment and secure a healthier and more prosperous future for the nation.
