Security and fraud expert, Richard Kumadoe, has suggested that Ghana reverts to a pre-independence era where traditional authorities were primary decision-makers for the people.
He expressed that entrusting power in to traditional leaders would be more reliable than relying on parliamentarians who currently make and enact the country’s laws.
During an interview on the Angel Morning Show, Mr. Kumadoe recommended that the nation should increasingly rely on chieftaincy institutions, allowing traditional authorities to make decisions for the state rather than parliamentarians who, according to him, struggle to interpret laws effectively.
Mr. Kumadoe emphasized that Ghanaian politicians, particularly parliamentarians, have largely failed in interpreting the laws and that replacing them with traditional leaders could be more beneficial for the country’s development.
“I think that our forefathers who were traditional authorities and had no formal education were able to govern well without reading laws but with the privilege of education, our current parliamentarians have failed themselves and failed everybody in this country.
So going forward, we should hand over the country to chiefs or we should better go and look for people who understand what this whole democracy is and come and govern us,” he said on Angel TV.
Mr. Kumadoe, in his proposal, mentioned some of the country’s revered chiefs whom he believes could outperform parliamentarians if given the authority to make national decisions.
“Let’s look for kings, about six of them – maybe we can settle on the Western Regional House of Chiefs President, we can choose Asantehene – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, pick one chief from the Volta Region and pick Yaa Naa Abuabakari II [Dagbon Overlord] and then we can pick one from the Upper West and give them the country to govern and let everybody go and find work and do because what you people are doing is understandable and undemocratic.
Because these things, these people are doing are not democracy, we have studied it and compared it to what democracy is across the globe particularly where you people had your democracy from, but it has no resemblance.”
He highlighted that these respected traditional leaders possess wisdom, integrity, and a deep understanding of the nation’s cultural values, which would benefit the governance and development of Ghana more effectively than the current parliamentary system.
He added “They are just disturbing everybody in this country and wasting natural resources on things that do not matter….”
“The security and fraud consultant’s suggestions followed the recent tension in Parliament between the majority and minority caucus over who occupies the majority seat after four Members of Parliament left their respective parties to contest as independents in the 2024 general elections.
