The Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has refuted the assertion by the immediate past New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration regarding their achievements in road construction.
The administration led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo claimed to have constructed 11,000 kilometers of new roads during its tenure from 2017 to January 2025 before handing over power to the current government.
However, the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has dismissed the NPP’s claims, stating that the actual number of kilometers constructed is far below the figures presented.
Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, downplayed the NPP’s claims at his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, 2025.
According to Agbodza, official records show that the NPP government constructed only 673 kilometers of new roads.
“At the time of the transition, the new roads constructed amounted to 673 kilometres. The record in Parliament clearly shows that Ghana did not construct 11,000 kilometres of new roads since 2017 but rather focused on re-graveling and graveling,” Agbodza stated.
He clarified that while much of the work on roads involved re-graveling and upgrading, which are crucial for preserving the road network, these efforts should not be confused with the construction of entirely new roads.
“At the time of the transition, the new roads constructed were 673 kilometres and so the record Parliament has is that Ghana did not construct 11,000 kilometres of new roads since 2017 but rather 673 kilometres have been constructed as new roads. The bulk of the work which has been done is re-graveling and graveling, which is 6,185.90 kilometres,” he added.
