The National Vice Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, has issued a firm rebuttal to allegations linking him to illegal mining activities, popularly known as ‘galamsey’.
Speaking on the matter, on Angel TV’s Evening News on Wednesday July 16, 2025, Mr. Alhassan dismissed the accusations as baseless.
“In the first place, the allegations levelled against me are unfounded falsehood. There’s no iota of truth in the claims,” he stated.
Responding to claims that he collaborated with the NDC’s National Organiser Joseph Yamin to form a taskforce that extorted monies from mining sites, Mr. Alhassan denied any such arrangement.
“There hasn’t been any point that I connived with our National Organizer to form any taskforce to extort monies at mining sites as claimed,” he emphasized.
He further challenged anyone with evidence of financial transactions linked to him either through bank accounts or mobile money transfers to make it public.
“I’m ever prepared for it,” he said, adding that he has never engaged in illegal mining or destruction of forest reserves.
“EOCO hasn’t invited me as it stands now. However, once they do, I’ll honour their invitation to explain my side of the story,” the NDC National Vice Chair noted.
Reiterating his position, Mr. Alhassan asserted, “I’m putting on record again that I have not formed any taskforce and I cannot act in such a manner.”
He also suggested that the allegations stem from unnamed individuals deliberately attempting to tarnish his reputation.
“You can see clearly that some two or three unfazed individuals are hiding somewhere in attempt to tarnish my name,” he remarked.
To affirm his integrity, Mr. Alhassan vowed to step down from his position if any evidence is produced against him.
“Anyone with evidence of extortion to any taskforce I have established, or with evidence of my excavators parked anywhere and being used to destroy our lands, should bring it on and in less than 24 hours, I, Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, will resign as National Vice Chairman because money doesn’t buy integrity.
“I have built a very strong reputation and it is not this time when my government is in power and resetting the country with good governance that I’ll establish a taskforce to extort monies and engage in such practices we are all against.”
His comments follow a directive from the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, instructing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to launch a full-scale investigation into the alleged galamsey activities involving Mr. Alhassan and the NDC’s National Organiser, Joseph Yamin.
