Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, will be remembered at a ‘One-week’ observance scheduled for Friday, August 30, 2025, in Accra, the family announced.
The announcement was made by the Abusuapanyin (head of family) on Tuesday, August 5, following a visit to the Manhyia Palace to officially inform the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of Lumba’s passing.
The Abusuapanyin indicated that during the visit, he emphasized the singer’s royal lineage, noting that the family could not make public arrangements without first consulting the Asantehene.
However, he confirmed that Lumba’s final funeral rites would be held in Kumasi, with the date expected to be announced after the one week celebration.
“Led by some chiefs who led the family, the Asantehene openly accepted our visit and quickly responded to our mission for seeing him. He told us he has heard our reason for coming and added that we should bear in mind that Lumba is a son and royal of the Asante Kingdom.
“As an elderly person and head of the family, I perfectly understood the position of His Royal Majesty and with the other members of the family who went with me, we know what to do for Daddy Lumba’s final rest.
“For the One Week celebration, we can do it in Accra but for the funeral, we need to return Otumfuo’s son back to him in Kumasi for the final funeral rites so it will hold in Kumasi,” he said.
The family also confirmed plans to inform the Ga Manste ahead of the one week observation.
He said discussions regarding the venue for the August 30 event are ongoing, with indications that a larger space may be required due to the turnout at the Candlelight Vigil held earlier.
“We are still deliberating on the venue. If we look at the huge crowd at the Candle Night Vigil on Saturday and take into consideration the initial venue selected, it needs to be changed. A big venue has become necessary to avoid chaos or stampede to ensure that everything goes on well,” the Abusuapanyin highlighted.
The venue, he stressed, would be communicated accordingly in due time.
Ahead of the one week celebration in Accra, another Vigil is expected to take place on Saturday, August 9, at Heroe’s Park, Kumasi Sports Stadium.
This follows a similar memorial held on August 2 at Accra Independence Square.
