A member of the Kennedy Agyapong’s Campaign Team, Ernest Owusu-Bempah has taken a swipe at defeated Presidential hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, blaming him for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) dismal showing in the 2024 elections across all six northern regions.
He argued that despite being a northerner, Bawumia presided over the party’s poorest performance in the area, describing it as the worst in NPP’s electoral history.
“For the first time unprecedented, a northern candidate performed so badly in the north than any NPP presidential candidate in the history of our party, not even Professor Albert Adu Boahen, J. A Kufuor or Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he emphasized in an interview on Angel TV, on Thursday, December 18, 2025.
Mr. Owusu-Bempah added that, for this reason, it is not advisable for NPP to consider him again as a flagbearer for the next elections. “Per the records Dr. Bawumia lost in all the six northern regions and it is not encouraging for the NPP to choose him again as our candidate.”
He further compared the total votes acquired by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2020 and Dr. Bawumia in 2024 across all regions in the north.
“Akufo-Addo who is not a northerner had 409, 963 votes in the Northern Region while Bawumia had 370,828, in North east Akufo Addo had 122, 72 and Bawumia had 134,800 in his own home region.
“In Savannah Region Akuffo had 80, 605 but Bawumia had 56,774 and in Upper east region Akufo had 170,340 while Bawumia had 106,700,” Mr. Bempah said.
