Lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), and Aide to the 2028 NPP flagbearer, Ellen Ama Daaku, has expressed disagreement with the current government’s move to change the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Accra International Airport.
Ama Daaku contended that altering a name due to its association with a coup could establishes a precedent, allowing subsequent governments to justify removing monuments linked to previous leaders.
“The Next NPP will also remove Jerry Rawlings’ name from any monuments in the country, such as the Rawlings Park in Accra and Madina, if the removal is linked to coup-related legacy,” she mentioned
In a discussion with Saddick Adams on Anopa Bof on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Mrs. Ama Darko highlighted the importance of the name change, noting that certain names on monuments serve as a reflection of Ghana’s history and a way to honor the legacy of the nation’s forebears.
She questioned that ‘erasing the name Kotoka, what economic benefits does the country gain?”
According to Ellen Ama Darko, there is no justification for changing the name; however, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should not act based on the connection to Kotoka’s overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah.
“I don’t agree with the Minority leader, Mr. Mahama Avariga, if they want to rename the Airport because he is a coup maker, stressing that the founder of the NDC is an undisputed coup maker,” she stated.
