The historic Bogoso-Prestea Mine has recorded its first gold pour in nearly two years, marking a significant milestone under the leadership of Heath Goldfields Limited.
This achievement follows the company’s takeover of the mine in late 2024 after prolonged operational challenges left the once-thriving facility dormant.
The shutdown had created uncertainty for hundreds of workers and residents in the Bogoso and Prestea communities, who rely heavily on mining activities for their livelihoods.
At a press briefing in Bogoso on Thursday, February 19, the Managing Director of Heath Goldfields, Patrick Appiah Mensah, described the first gold pour as a symbol of resilience and responsible Ghanaian stewardship.
He explained that reviving operations required overcoming significant financial and operational hurdles, including settling outstanding employee entitlements, paying utility arrears, rehabilitating critical infrastructure, and restoring key processing systems.
The restart has already created employment opportunities for more than 1,400 workers, many of whom were affected by the prolonged shutdown.
The company has also begun implementing safety enhancements and operational upgrades to ensure sustainable production going forward.
“I am deeply proud to declare that, having successfully addressed and surmounted these challenges, the renowned Bogoso-Prestea gold mine, now guided by Heath Goldfields Limited, has successfully completed its first gold pour after a full 24-month halt in activities.
This is more than merely resuming production; it is a strong testament to resilience, perseverance, and effective Ghanaian leadership,” Mr. Mensah stated.
Management further assured stakeholders that the mine’s revival forms part of a broader strategy to stabilise operations, rebuild investor confidence, and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s mining sector and local economic development.
The successful gold pour is expected to restore optimism within the Western Region, signalling a renewed chapter for one of Ghana’s historically significant gold mining operations.
Looking ahead, Heath Goldfields is finalising a feasibility study to modernise the Prestea Underground Mine using technology-driven methods for improved safety and productivity. Work is also underway on the sulphide treatment plant, which will unlock the mine’s full potential.
Mr. Mensah emphasised that the mine will serve as a catalyst for sustainable socio-economic development in host communities. “If you take care of the communities around the mine, the communities will take care of you,” he said.
The revival of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine is expected to provide sustainable employment, increase local participation, improve safety standards, and contribute significantly to Ghana’s national revenue.
