The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has engaged District Officers of the Ghana Health Service, midwives, and heads of various health facilities in the constituency to improve maternal and neonatal health.
The engagement was held at the MP’s auditorium in Gyaakye and focused on reports from various facilities, including CHPS Compounds and the District Directorate on Maternal and Neonatal Health.
Dr. Adutwum discussed with the health professionals the best solutions to the challenges outlined in the reports.
During the engagement, Dr. Adutwum promised that the Bosomtwe Health Directorate would raise funds to help secure accommodation for midwives who commute from distant locations to the facilities where they work.
The Bosomtwe District Director of Health Services, Dr. Twumasi Mensah, outlined the challenges affecting maternal and neonatal healthcare delivery in the district.
He suggested ways to improve their efforts and overcome the challenges faced by health centres in the district.
In his presentation, Dr. Mensah cited several key issues, including the late arrival of pregnant women to facilities and their total refusal to attend antenatal care.
He also highlighted the lack of diagnostic systems in many facilities, poor road networks, and a lack of accommodation for staff in some communities.
“Lack of diagnostic facilities seemed to be the topmost factor that weakens the efficiency of the efforts of the personnel associated with maternal and neonatal healthcare delivery, especially at the CHPS Compounds,” he revealed.
Dr. Mensah charged all midwives along with their facility heads to occasionally provide individual reports on their observations concerning maternal and neonatal health care.
