The Awutu Senya East Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Addo, has called on the Municipal Assembly to suspend the second phase of the Kasoa market demolition exercise.
According to the opposition party, stakeholders must first engage traders on clear resettlement arrangements.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Mr. Addo emphasized that the Assembly must first consult the affected traders and provide a proper relocation plan before continuing with the project.
According to him, thousands of petty traders risk losing their livelihoods if the demolition proceeds without a clear plan for their resettlement.
“For over 8,000 petty traders, our question is simple: will the 800 people get the stores after the construction? No. That is why we are pleading with the contractors,” he said.
Mr. Addo stressed that the Assembly should temporarily halt the second phase of the demolition and hold discussions with the traders to reach a mutually beneficial solution.
He cautioned that if authorities ignore the concerns raised by traders and party members in the area, the NPP could reverse the project if it returns to power.
“We are assuring him that we are going to use any legal process, should the NPP form government in 2029, and pull down these structures and give the land back to the petty traders to do their trading under a temporary structure,” he said.
He argued that the land in question lies within a road reserve earmarked for future road expansion, questioning the decision to construct permanent stores in the area.
He also emphasized that building permanent structures there could create challenges when the planned road expansion begins.
