The Ghana National Fire Service (GNS) has reported that a total of 12 firefighters were wounded while fighting a blaze from an explosion caused by a fuel tanker carrying 54,000 litres of petrol at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region.
The officers were personnel from the Apam and Kasoa Fire Stations who responded to the blaze recorded on March 17, 2025, around 6 am.
According to the Service, the officers got injured when fire reignited from the tanker and exploded during cooling operations.
“During cooling operations aimed at preventing re-ignition and possible secondary explosion, the tanker reignited and subsequently exploded, resulting in injuries to twelve 12 firefighters,” It disclosed in a statement.
The GFNS pointed out that four sustained severe injuries, with three of them rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital and the remaining one treated at the Potsin Polyclinic.
The remaining eight, who, according to the GFNS, sustained minor injuries, were treated on-site by the Ambulance Service Team.
“All the severely injured firefighters have since been treated and discharged.”
Meanwhile, the Central Regional Commander, ACO I Merinder Mary Attigah Mensah, in the company of the Director of Operations, DCFO Roberta Aggrey Ghanson, visited both the injured personnel and the incident scene and assured them of Management’s commitment to their welfare and full recovery.
