Bodies of police officers who drowned in line of duty retrieved

Bodies of two police junior officers who got drowned in Oda River near Obuasi have been found.

The two were returning from operational duties when the canoe they were onboard together with two other police officers capsized.

G/L/Cpl. Stephen Kyeremeh and G/L/Cpl. Amedius Akwesi Boateng were declared missing by the police on July 16.

Giving update about the situation on twitter on Friday, July 17, 2020, the police said the two have been found.

“The bodies of the two Police Officers have been retrieved from the Oda River. Investigation still ongoing.”

Background

The two Lance Corporals stationed at the Obuasi District Police together with two other officers, were dispatched to Krobro, a village near Jacobu after the police received a distress call about a robbery activity.

They were on Obuasi-Dunkwa highway patrol duties when the distress call was received about some small scale miners attacked by armed robbers proceeded to Kobro.

The officers in an effort to get to the scene, hired a canoe to cross the Oda River to the site where the robbery attack was reported to have occurred.

The robbers however escaped upon seeing the police.

While returning, the canoe capsized with four policemen onboard but two of them, G/Sgt. Isaac Nyamekye and G/Sgt. James Ahiman managed to swim to safety.

The two corporals reportedly got drowned together with their riffles.
