The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has emerged as the most corrupt institution in Ghana in the latest survey conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
According to the study, more than GH₵17.4 million bribes representing 53.2% were paid in 2021 to the police institution making it top the list of 23 institutions that received bribes.
The GSS made the revelation in a survey dubbed “Corruption in Ghana, People’s Experience and View” which aimed at unearthing corrupt institutions and present data that will guide the formulation of policies to fight the canker.
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and officers of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) came next with 37.4% and 33.6% respectively.
Elected government representatives were last on the list with a rating of 2.9%.
According to the survey, people with the highest level of (tertiary) education were 1.6 times more likely to have paid a bribe than people with no formal education.
Also, 10 out of the 16 administrative regions recorded the prevalence of bribery higher than the national average. There are, however, sizeable variations across the 16 regions of the country.
The prevalence of bribery in the Bono East, Savannah and Volta regions, for example, are substantially lower than the national rate, recording 11.8, 14.5 and 19.1 per cent respectively.
On the contrary, bribery in the Western North, Ahafo and North East regions, is substantially higher than the national, rating 53.4, 47.0 and 41.9 per cent respectively.
