GES directs teachers to keep schools open and ensure safety of children despite strike

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instructed heads of kindergartens, and primary schools, as well as junior and senior high schools, to have their facilities open despite the ongoing nationwide strike by teacher unions across the country.

The leadership of three teacher unions –National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT) declared a nationwide strike on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, to protest the demands of conditions of service.

Thou the Fair Wages and Salary Commission has invited the unions for a meeting om Thursday, March 21, 2024.

The GES in a statement signed by its Head of Public Relations, Cassandra Twum Ampofo directed all heads of schools “to mobilize their management teams to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in schools.”

The statement further entreated parents and guardians to exercise restraints as management of the service continues to work around the clock to salvage the situation.

“Meanwhile, parents are advised to remain calm and be assured that management is closely monitoring the situation and will advise on the way forward accordingly,” it added.

That notwithstanding all “Regional and District Directors have further been directed to ensure that Heads keep schools opened and closely supervise all children who report to school pending further directives from Management of GES.”
