Ellen Ama Daaku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disclosed that Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss for the Black Stars against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, shattered her love for football.

The Communications Team member of the opposition NPP said her disappointment over the former Black Stars skipper’s missed penalty left her heartbroken.
Ghana was just one kick away from securing a historic World Cup semi-final spot in South Africa 2010 after a penalty was awarded following Uruguay’s Luis Suárez’s infamous handball on the goal line in stoppage time.
Asamoah Gyan, however, struck his penalty against the crossbar, and Ghana eventually lost in the penalty shootout after extra time.
This heartbreaking moment left many Ghanaians, especially football-loving fans, in deep pain.
Madam Daaku confessed to Saddick Adams on Angel TV that her love and appetite for football never returned after Gyan’s infamous miss.
“I don’t like football and never liked it after the 2010 FIFA World Cup when Asamoah Gyan broke our hearts,” she said on the Angel Morning Show on Wednesday, February 5, 2024.
She hinted that she has never regained interest in football since that painful experience.
“Since then, I decided to stop following the sport, so now, whether the Black Stars or any other team performs well, I am unbothered,” Ama Daaku stated.
Her revelation adds to many disappointments some Ghanaians experienced after the match and was in her reaction to the tragic death of a football fan during league match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko.
Gospel musician Phillipa Baafi once revealed that she was forced into labour on the night of the game.
