Three pupils and a taxi driver have died in an accident that occurred on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the Winneba Junction on the Winneba–Cape Coast Highway in the Central Region
The driver died on the spot and the three pupils passed away at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital while receiving treatment.
According to the Winneba Fire Service, nine people, including seven of the pupils, were sent to the facility for treatment, but three of the children died Tuesday morning.
The Winneba Fire Service says a Toyota RAV4 with the registration number GN 5505-18 collided with a Hyundai Jet Taxi with the registration number CR 748-20 immediately after the Winneba Junction.
Reports indicate that the taxi was carrying seven pupils from Winneba to the Apam township, while the Toyota RAV4 was traveling from Mankesim in the direction of Accra.
Speaking to Angel News, the Winneba Municipal Fire Service Commander, DO2 Fredrick Adu-Roku, said, the Toyota RAV4 made a wrongful overtaking and collided with the taxi onboard with seven pupils from St. Paul’s School and Uncle Rich Preparatory School, all in Winneba.
DO2 Fredrick Adu-Roku confirmed that the taxi driver died on the spot, while nine others were sent to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for treatment.
He added that the three children who were in critical condition died on the morning of Tuesday, June 24, bringing the death toll to four.
He further stated, “70 percent of accident cases recorded in Ghana are man-made,” and called on drivers to drive with care and obey road signs to save lives and property.
A investigations is currently launched into the incident to determine the excat circumstances leading to the crash.
