The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the Government of Ghana has fully cleared all outstanding arrears of the Capitation Grant owed basic schools from 2023 to date.
In a press release dated July 23, 2025, the GES stated that the payment of these arrears reflects the government’s strong resolve and practical support for the smooth operation and effective management of basic education across the country.
“The Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform the general public, particularly stakeholders in the basic education sector, that the Government of Ghana has fully settled all outstanding arrears of the Capitation Grant,” the statement announced.
The Capitation Grant, according to GES, plays a critical role in the administration of public basic schools by providing much-needed financial support for the purchase of teaching and learning materials, minor repairs, and other essential school-based management activities.
“Timely disbursement of this grant empowers heads of basic schools to deliver quality education with greater autonomy and accountability,” it added.
The Management of GES also acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritising the payment despite prevailing economic pressures.
“We further commend all heads of basic schools for their patience and continued dedication in ensuring that teaching and learning have remained uninterrupted, regardless.”
GES urged all school authorities to use the funds responsibly and in line with the guidelines for the utilisation of the Capitation Grant, indicating that monitoring teams at the district and regional levels will intensify supervision to ensure compliance and value for money.
The release continued that the GES is committed to working with stakeholders to improve learning outcomes, enhance school management systems, and ensure the delivery of inclusive, equitable, and quality education for every Ghanaian child.
