Director of Economic Statistics at the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Francis Bright Mensah, has outlined twenty(20) items contributing to Ghana’s current 8% inflation rate.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Friday, November 7, 2025, he outlined the food items contributing most to the 8% inflation rate and other factors influencing the number.
“ Items contributing to the 8% inflation include ginger, garden eggs, herrings, plantain, tomatoes, cassava flour, beef, river fish, kenkey with fried fish, fufu with soup, electricity, charcoal, accommodation, public and private secondary school fees, and cinema or cultural services,” he revealed
According to him, price variations depend on the cost at which vendors purchase their ingredients in local markets, along with transportation and storage expenses.
“The variation in prices depends on how vendors purchase their ingredients at local markets, as well as transportation and storage costs, which influence how sellers set their prices,” he emphasized.
Mr. Mensah further explained that food prices are determined through market surveys and weighing of food items.
He added that the service regularly tracks the quantities of food purchased each month to better understand the buying patterns of Ghanaians.
“We go to rice vendors to weigh the rice and also weigh different bowls in order to accurately determine the inflation rate of the rice,” he said.
