The Transport Minister, Joseph Bakari, has asserted that renaming Kotoka International Airport does not necessitate legislation in Parliament, contrary to public views.
In an address to the press on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, he pointed out that the renaming of airports in Ghana has traditionally been carried out via executive order.
“It came as a result of NLCD 309; it was a decree that was brought to set a trust to cater for the families of Kotoka and other soldiers who were killed along that time,” he disclosed.
Mr. Bakari emphasised that the decree’s purpose was to establish a trust, thereby eliminating the need for parliamentary legislation to operationalise it.
“It was an executive order that was given to recognise somebody who was killed at the forecourt of the airport,” he stated.
He added, “The rightful thing is for us to come through an executive announcement again that the name is reverted to its original name.”
