President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct a new airport in Sunyani, revealing that the government has secured land for the project and will soon begin procurement processes.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a 24-hour market at Dormaa in the Bono Region on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the President said arrangements are far advanced, with officials expected to inspect the land before construction begins.
“Nana, your Sunyani Airport, you have talked about it for a very long time. We have now secured a site where we will construct a new airport in Sunyani,” he said.
He added that the next step will be a site inspection, after which the procurement process will begin to enable the selection of a contractor.
“We will go and inspect the land tomorrow, and very soon procurement will start so that a contractor can begin work,” he stated.
The President noted that the Sunyani airport project has been a long-standing concern for traditional authorities and residents, and that the government is committed to delivering modern aviation infrastructure to support development in the region.
He added that the new airport will enhance connectivity, promote trade and investment, and improve access to the Bono Region and its surrounding areas.
