President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has expressed profound gratitude to Ghana for its pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s fight for independence, noting that Ghana served as a crucial training ground for those who led the struggle for freedom in Zimbabwe.
He emphasized that Ghana’s historical contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation is something they will forever cherish.
President Mnangagwa made these remarks at a State Banquet hosted in his honor by President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
“Most of my colleagues received training here in Ghana for the armed liberation of Zimbabwe. We are forever grateful to Ghana,” he elaborated.
He acknowledged that the training his predecessors received in Ghana was instrumental in their battle against colonial rule.
President Mnangagwa arrived in Ghana on April 1 for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation between the two nations.
In his speech, President Mahama reiterated Ghana’s commitment to deepening ties with Zimbabwe, stating that their enduring friendship is rooted in shared history and mutual respect.
The ceremony also featured an exchange of symbolic gifts. President Mnangagwa received fugu and kente from President Mahama, while he presented a bag made from crocodile skin and a unique artifact, symbolizing the lasting friendship and cultural ties between the two nations.
