A 62‑year‑old UK-based Ghanaian entrepreneur, Stephen Akuoko, who ran the Tribal Foods business in Watford, has been sentenced to two years in prison for serious food safety offenses.
According to report by DW Africa, St Albans Crown Court also banned him from operating any food business for five years and ordered him to pay about $3,340 in costs within three years.
Investigations revealed that Akuoko stored fish in unhygienic conditions inside his flat; even in a bathtub and on the floor next to a toilet, and supplied ready‑made meals to supermarkets and small shops.
Prosecutors noted that some products had excessively long use‑by dates and lacked proper ingredient labels.
The report further indictaed that he continued distributing the food despite official notices, which the court described as a “flagrant disregard for the law.”
Akuoko pleaded guilty to two food safety offenses, including failure to comply with a remedial action notice.
