Media personality and DJ, Ohemaa Woyeje, has called on food vendors especially ‘Kenkey’ sellers, to prioritize cleanliness in their food preparation and storage practices to protect public health.
Speaking on her program Y’adwumanie on Angel FM, the outspoken presenter expressed concern about the unhygienic handling of food sold to the public.
According to her, although flies are naturally attracted to food, cooks in the past dealt with the same problem of flies, but they adopted practical methods to prevent the insects from contaminating their food.
“In the olden days it wasn’t like this. Although it’s normal for flies to come around, they made sure the flies didn’t touch the food; they chased them away,” she said.
She advised vendors to properly cover their food with nets, lace, or other protective materials to prevent contamination.
“If you will use lace or something to cover it, then do it,” she added.
Ohemaa Woyeje also criticised the practice of leaving cooked food uncovered overnight, warning that it exposes meals to insects and reptiles, which can pose serious health risks to consumers.
“Some leave the food there overnight without covering it, and all sorts of insects and lizards get into the food for human consumption, which is not healthy,” she noted.
She urged vendors to adopt better hygiene standards to safeguard the health of their customers and maintain public confidence in local food businesses.
