The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have called off their planned sit-down strike that was announced in protest against authorities’ failure to clear traders from roadways.
The transport operators noted that they had raised concerns about trading activities on road corridors, which they said affect the safety and smooth movement of vehicles and commuters.
In a joint press release issued on November 4, 2026, the transport operators said the decision followed a meeting held on November 3 with the Ministers of the Interior, Transport, and Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
According to the statement, the planned industrial action was suspended after government representatives assured transport operators of measures to address their concerns.
“The Ministers assured us of their firm commitments to address our concerns, including the trading activities on road corridors, adequate signage, sustained public education and continued engagement with transport operators. A committee has been formed to identify hotspots and recommend the way forward,” the statement said.
They expressed appreciation to the ministers for what they described as a prompt engagement on the matter and apologised to commuters and the public for any inconvenience the planned strike could have caused.
“We thank the Ministers for their prompt engagement and apologise unreservedly to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the planned sit-down strike would have caused,” the statement said.
The unions also indicated that they expect their concerns to be addressed within 30 days.
“It is our expectation that all our concerns raised during the meeting will be addressed within 30 days, failure of which we would have no option but to embark on the sit-down strike,” the statement added.
The statement was jointly signed by the General Secretary of the GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, and the General Secretary of the GRTCC, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, on behalf of road transport operators.
