The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the successful completion of the three-day teacher promotion aptitude test, which saw over 60,000 teachers participate nationwide.
In a statement released on Wednesday, November 4, the Service said the exercise, which ended yesterday, was generally smooth and incident-free across all examination centres.
The GES said this year’s exercise marks a significant step towards implementing the policy to decouple professional ranks from administrative positions to create more opportunities for teachers to advance in their careers.
“This policy intervention is intended to broaden opportunities for the career progression of our staff and ensure that deserving teachers are not disadvantaged,” they said.
Under the policy, the Service is expected to record a 1,500 per cent increase in the number of teachers attaining the rank of Director II, while those attaining Director I are expected to increase by 340 per cent.
The GES further indicated that there would be substantial increases in the number of teachers progressing through other ranks, including Principal Superintendent (PS), Assistant Director II (ADII), Assistant Director I (ADI) and Deputy Director (DD).
According to the Service, the policy is aimed at ensuring that deserving teachers are not disadvantaged by the limited availability of administrative positions.
It stressed that the new development represents a major shift in teachers’ career progression, with greater emphasis on recognising professional competence, experience and continued service.
The Service expressed optimism that the policy would improve teacher morale and professional motivation, adding that deliberate efforts had been made to ensure qualified staff could progress without being constrained by the availability of vacancies.
The GES also wished all participating teachers the best of luck and commended the officers, invigilators, administrators and other stakeholders who contributed to the successful conduct of the exercise.
