The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has cautioned the public against collecting petroleum products from overturned tankers and other accident scenes, warning that such actions could put lives at risk.
Speaking at the 2026 NPA Consumer Week celebration in Kasoa, Mr Tameklo urged residents to prioritise safety and resist invitations from friends, relatives and other members of their communities to collect fuel from accident scenes.
He stressed that the decision to fetch spilled petroleum products could have serious consequences, not only for those directly involved but also for their families and communities.
Mr Tameklo encouraged the public to discourage others from approaching accident scenes to collect fuel and instead allow the appropriate authorities to manage the situation.
He noted that community members, transport operators and families all have a role to play in promoting safety by educating one another about the dangers associated with collecting fuel from damaged tankers.
The NPA Chief Executive said protecting lives must take precedence over the temptation to collect spilled petroleum products, urging the public to remain cautious whenever tanker accidents occur.
