Ghana’s sole representative in the ongoing 2023/24 CAF Confederations Cup campaign, Dreams FC, have advanced to the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in the club’s history.
The feat was achieved after coach Karim Zito and his men held Malian giants, Stade de Malien to a 1-1 stalemate in the second-leg quarter-final clash on Sunday evening at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Ghana.
Dreams FC, until the second leg had secured a narrow 2-1 victory in the first leg in Bamako, Mali. In a keenly contested clash, the first half ended without a goal for each side, but it was the visitors who announced their presence after the break.
Yoro Diaby put the visitors in front in the 59th minute with a powerful strike from a free kick from the left side of the Dreams FC defense.
The goal, however, drew the adrenaline of the ‘Still Believe’ lads as Sylvester Simba fired home the equalizer 10 minutes later, after coming on for Suhuyini in the 62nd minute.
Dreams FC thought they had registered the icing on the cake goal through Agyenim Boateng, but it was ruled for offside.
With the game ending 1-1 means, the Ghana Premier League side booked a semi-final berth on a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.
The qualification also means Dreams FC achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Ghanaian team to reach the semifinals of the CAF Confederation Cup since Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko back in 2004 during the inaugural edition of the tournament.
Dreams FC now face Egyptian side Zamalek in the semi-final of the CAF Confederations Cup.
The first leg is scheduled for April 21, with the second leg to follow on April 28.
