Traders in Sakaman in the Ablekuma North Constituency of Greater Accra have lamented the impact of illegal increment in transportation fares on their business activities.
These traders, who mostly are market women in Sakaman and its environment said the act by drivers and their mate affects their day-to-day movements coupled with their businesses.
Expressing their frustrations while describing the development as “uncalled-for and unfair”, the aggrieved traders called out the actions of these ‘trotro drivers and their mates’.
This came to the notice of Augustina Ayuba on May 31, 2024, in a commercial vehicle transporting passengers from Accra to Kaneshie where some market women from Sakaman complained bitterly.
They explained that the initial fare of GH¢6.00 from the Police Headquarters in Accra to Kaneshie has been increased audaciously by some trotro drivers where they currently take Gh¢7 and Gh¢8 respectively.
Speaking on the said day in a predominant vehicle onboard market women, they said “Some mates keep increasing transport faire in the name of hike in fuel prices.”
In their voices, the economic hardship is so dire that customers hardly patronise their goods and items which in a way affects their zeal to go to the market daily for business activities.
As such, they added the situation also prevents them from having a specific budget, particularly on how much they spend daily, thus, their displeasure because they are compelled to pay more for the continual illegal increment of fare.
According to these Sakaman Traders, the situation is having a major setback in terms of their profits and budgeting.
They concluded by calling on authorities in the transport sector to lay down structures in increments of fare for drivers to adhere accordingly to ensure they desist from the practice.
